Student Living, Dandenong Road
Occupying a corner position set back from Dandenong Road, the prime location of this site enabled a design for student accommodation where indoor-outdoor lifestyle and community connectivity were key.
In a market dominated by large, often impersonal purpose-built-student-accommodation, the client’s aspiration was to set an alternative precedent for the contemporary young student seeking a unique lifestyle.
The compact nature of the site lent itself to a boutique design approach. With 30 beds, the design works hard to maximise the possibilities of the space, whilst cultivating a homely, welcoming experience for the international student clientele who will study at Monash University.
Nestled in an area with dual developments complete or underway nearby, the built form is softened by articulation down Koonawarra Street that represents a continuation of the residential feel. The built form was addressed to read as a series of small townhouses stepping down the site, with a recessive third floor.
The design achieves two outdoor gathering spaces for socialising or relaxed study, and the generous setback from the street frontage allows for a series of plantings to soften the aesthetic and add a softer character to what is a harder urban edge.
