Expanding design possibilities // Graeme Heatley steps in to Senior Associate position

Architecture is never static. It moves in step with social, economic and environmental conditions, shaping the way people live and interact. For Graeme Heatley, navigating this complexity has defined his design career.

Now, as he steps into the role of Senior Associate, Graeme continues to drive design discourse within the studio. He leads projects across diverse sectors while uncovering new solutions to housing that challenge conventional design thinking.

Graeme’s approach ensures progressive design solutions remain in tune with the studio’s philosophy; to deliver architecture that is responsive to its context, shaped by purpose and guided by real human need.

“Good design doesn’t impose a way of living, it creates the conditions for people to shape their own.” Graeme shares. “As a studio, we’re committed to pushing design boundaries, creating housing models that are open-ended enough to adapt alongside the people who inhabit them.”

RETHINKING TRADITIONAL HOUSING MODELS

With urban living in flux and affordability pressures intensifying, our studio is exploring co-living, intergenerational housing and other alternative typologies informed by global case studies.

“The way we live is evolving. Across the world, we’re seeing successful models that go beyond standalone apartments and ownership-based housing,” Graeme explains. “Shared resources, flexible spaces and integrated support networks offer a more interconnected approach to housing.”

At VIA, Graeme is actively examining how these global models can be reinterpreted in an Australian context, ensuring they are not simply replicated, but adapted to meet local social and cultural needs. This exploration goes beyond affordability, rethinking contemporary housing and its role within a broader social infrastructure.

LEADERSHIP THAT ENCOURAGES OPEN EXCHANGE

Rather than dictating outcomes, Graeme views leadership as a process of creating an inclusive space where diverse perspectives inform the design process. He sees this approach as a springboard for inventive design solutions, emerging through meaningful exchange and a culture of collaboration.

“Good leadership starts with asking the right questions, inviting dialogue and providing room for iteration. This allows for the strongest ideas to take hold,” he says.

Beyond project work, Graeme plays an active role in shaping VIA’s studio culture. He is a dedicated advocate for the studio’s values – Unhinged Curiosity, Razor Sharp and Step Inside – and an active mentor for the next generation of design leaders.

As Senior Associate, Graeme will continue to contribute to VIA’s culture, applying a critical lens to complex projects and ensuring that design thinking remains dynamic and responsive while rigour defines the outcomes.
