A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE ON SENIORS LIVING // INSIGHTS FROM ACROSS CONTINENTS

Our Managing Director, Frank Bambino, recently attended One Fell Swoop’s annual International Study Tours, delving into the diverse approaches to seniors living across the globe.

He previously attended the New Zealand tour, covering Auckland and Christchurch, while on this year’s tour of the USA, Frank explored Chicago, Phoenix, Palm Springs and Los Angeles.

Exploring a total of 30 seniors living communities across the continents offered invaluable insights, presenting the potential to inspire positive change for our local seniors living landscape.

A NEW AGEING DEMOGRAPHIC

Australia is on the brink of a significant demographic shift with Baby Boomers, comprising a substantial 21.5% of the population, entering their senior years. They also happen to represent the most affluent generation in Australian history.

This shift in our ageing population amplifies increased demand and undersupply of government funded care, prompting Baby Boomers to explore self-funded care options. Expectations are starting to fuel the demand for tailored solutions, marking a pivotal moment where the landscape is evolving to meet the wants of residents rather than just the needs.

This era will transcend traditional care models, with seniors now seeking personalised experiences, emphasising the need to provide choice, vitality, community and convenience.

REIMAGINING SENIORS LIVING

One Fell Swoop’s international study tours have yielded valuable insights into New Zealand’s and America’s seniors living systems, providing learnings that could be implemented into Australia’s seniors living sector in future.

Key takeaways underscore the importance of empowering individuals, offering them the flexibility to retire and age their way.

Creating communities that encourage active lifestyles and wellbeing also emerged as a central theme, highlighting the need to support activities that contribute to residents’ health and wellbeing. A focus on the culinary experience of seniors living demonstrated that premium food and beverage offerings are integral components of enhancing the resident experience.

Lastly, the integration of convenient services, such as a car service and tech concierge, emerged as essential elements to enhance connectivity and convenience.

CATERING TO AN EVOLVING LANDSCAPE

As we reflect on the insights gained from the study tour, a critical question emerges: In what other ways can we better meet the wants and needs of Australia’s ageing population?

As the journey toward redefining seniors living continues, our studio is committed to shaping innovative, human-led solutions for the evolving needs of future generations. Stay tuned for more updates on our pursuit of a new era for the sector.
